In the summer before my 5th grade, things started to change inside me. The family that lived across the street from us had a girl my age and many times we would play house. She and I were always a couple. We would pretend that we had children and things like that. Well, one day we just got married when I had to go home. She walked with me under the big tree on the street, I took one look at her, then kissed her on the mouth. I told her that that would assure we were still married the next time we played. Then I asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes! We started holding hands coming from school. It lasted about 3 months.
To many surprises, I had a girlfriend from 5th grade through High School. I just never thought it anyone’s business and at school, we were there to learn, not ogle. But, after school and weekend…..In fifth and sixth grade, it was more passing notes between classes, and many dates at the Crest theater on Saturdays, and phone calls.
Does anyone remember the year that Central Elementary went to downtown for a celebration? We did the “Texas Star” square dance in the program? They took us there for about a week of practices, and we sat on the floor with other schools. I met a girl that we flirted between, and after the program, it was close to State Fair Day. I invited her to go with us and she said yes. My dad gave Darrell, my cousin and me one dollar to ride 4 rides. But, the girl had $20. She offered to use it so we could ride many more rides. Though embarrassed of the situation, we had a great day. When we took her home, she invited me to a Halloween party at her house. My parents allowed me to go and we went as Raggedy Ann and Andy. We won the prize for best couple costumes and I got a candle shaped like a skeleton head. When you lit it the wax would come out red like blood. It was cool because when the wax burned down to the eyes, ears, nose and mouth, the bloody wax would drip out of them. I thought it was real cool. We broke up soon after, as kids do, and I found other girls to write letters.
In 6th grade, a new girl came to my class. I had never seen her, but I knew we would be friends immediately. I found out that her sister was becoming best friends with my sisters, and so we got closer and closer as friends. That friendship is still there today, unless this blog changes it. She will be in many of my stories to come.
(What you do when you do not have lunch money)
Every week, dad would usually put EXACTLY the amount for a lunch tray (Nothing extra). But many weeks, the money would not be there. I learned 2 magic card tricks that during play period, I would perform them until I had enough money for lunch. I, also, was not shy to ask someone for something off their plate if they were not going to eat it. I truly never knew if we would have dinner that night or not, so I ate what I could at lunch. You might say lunch was always “Magically Delicious”!
